Name of the play: Ptica (The Bird)

Author of the play: Jadran Grubišić
Light design: Luka Matić
Sound design: Srđan Badurina i Andrea Giordani
Light and sound master: Luka Matić

Duration of performance: 50 min

About the play:
It's about a man whose stable, monotonous life is changed by a bird that flies through his window one day. Their life becomes partnership, friendship, love...
It's a story about loneliness, faith in oneself, and in general what freedom is to a human. We are all dreaming about having wings. And? What if we had them?

When life is empty, a bird comes flying in.
When life is grey, a bird comes flying in.
When the happiest moment in life happens, a bird comes flying in.
Do I see it then?

The Bird arose from a small exercise for „the work of an actor in a genre“. It united exercises for space and the development of dramatic character from animals by using different qualities of movement and sound. With time I was collecting experiences from actor techniques and studied myself in them.
In all of that, looking for the opportunity to be honest and say something about myself, I was slowly writing the text, directing a little bit and was acting here and then... I tried to act the least and mostly talk about who I am and what's bothering me. The Bird is a kind of conflict with oneself but also a trace of one's love. The Bird is a big wish and love for the theatre, and some good friend that was necessary in walking through life and me at the academy. As much as I love all my birds and I thank them in this way, I also want to know am I someone's bird? That's what I aspire to...

About the performer:
Jadran Grubišić was born in 1984 in Osijek, where he took acting and puppetry classes at the Academy of art. From August 2008 till December 2009 he was a permanent member of the City puppet theatre in Rijeka. Since January 2010 he lives and works in Zagreb. He played in pieces for children and adults and is participant of numeruos home and international drama and puppet festivals.

Author of the text: Nikolaj Georgiev
Performers: Petya Yosifova, Zornitsa Antonova, Boris Krastev, Pavel Kolev, Ivan Ivanov, Nadezda Dicheva, Vasya Popova, Felicite Zeuh, Iva Georgieva, Biliana Mihailova, Roslana Dimenova, Ekaterina Mincheva, Georgi Lazarov, Nikola Stefanov
Scene movement: Vasilena Yordanova
Light design: Nikola Georgiev
Costume design: Slaveya Dimitrova

Duration of performance: 60 min

About the play:
"Shakespeare - contemporary and cruel" - this is what the most eminent English playwright is to his most contemporary and most cruel interpreter, professor Jan Kott. And if he succeeds in stripping all the other Shakespearean heroes out of their skin and showing us their meat - naked, their blood - running, now in "Hamlet" his surgical intervention is even more cardinal.
Trepanation opens the notorious Shakespearean skull and denudes Hamlet's brain for us so we could see the chaos of thoughts, "The Tempest" of thoughts which has been raging for centuries.
Jan Kott does not exhibit the question "What is Hamlet?", but "How do you become Hamlet?", "What is the Hamlet thing in Hamlet?", "What is that which makes hamlets from ones and non-hamlets from others?" and in an exceptionally vivid and readable scenic reading.
"Three Boys and One Girl" is the cruel line by Shakespeare formulated by Jan Kott and thrown as a glove in the face of our cruel "today", a cruel scenic vision of the murder not of Hamlet but of "the Hamlet gene" - so that he disappears forever and never torments the mankind again. How close we are to the Holy Scripture and to the story about Christ and king Irod. Only the names are different...

About the group:
The theatre of the University of Sofia was initially founded in 1968. Due to ideological considerations it was later shut down. It was re-established in 2000 as „@lma @lter“ Theatre-laboratory by its founder Nikolay Georgiev.
„@lma @lter“ penetrates into and researches the primary, essential theatre means of expression in the context of the present day. „@lma @lter“ is syncretic, creative, strongly unconventional, open, daring, and is also known as „The alive theatre“. The philosophy and the methodology of „@lma @lter“ is based on the aesthetics, theory and practice of the Bulgarian theatre reformer Geo Milev and probably is closest to Grotowski's „Poor theatre“ principles. Each performance of „@lma @lter“ should be different from the previous one, because it is set on the principle of „happening here, now, with these people“. „@lma @lter“ has won recognition in the cultural life of its country as a unique place, where the theatre is not „produced“, but born, where „things happen“, what is a categorical alternative to the (conventional) theatre in Bulgaria.

Duration of performance: 60 min

About the play:
With the playful kitsch-noir aesthetics, through a musical-theathre form, interwine themes of violence, personal responsibility and lost childhoods. An inspiration for the play came from a boruad spectrum – from the dark McDonagh's play „Jastučko“, H. C. Andersen, Tim Burton, well known children rymes to the ucompromising punk.

The key feature of Škrip Orkestra is sharpened relation between pop melodies and serious, almost nauseating content, what brings out the question of each individual (and author) for his social and cultural habits, and seeks the most effective way of artistic expression.

About the group:

For 40 years Glej has been synonymous with new, fresh, open and contemporary theater.
To this day, Glej maintains its original mission: to seek and create new trends and directions in the theatre. Our shows are communicative and open, yet at the same time well thought out and built. We deal with contemporary approaches to the spectator, living stories and engaged projects. We seek out and unravel paradoxes, try to find names for nameless phenomena and approach themes and situations directly and with an open mind.

Duration of performance: 45 min

About the play:
The play has two performing forms. In a theatre space and outdoors, in real life, on squares, streets... The outdoor performance, we will show on Test!, is ment to be an inspiration for momentary action.
In this part of the performance we have a goal to explore the human perception of the amazing and point to the beauty of life. To show that with everyday obligations a little thing is enough to make life beautiful. We will enhance people (passerbys) to liberate themselves from bans, to move their boundaries of consciousness.
The theatre part of the performance is still a work in progress.
This play is inspired with our exam production based on the text of Peter Handke: The moment we didn't know anything about each other. Because of the interesting text and flexibility that is allowed to this structure, we decided to develop that material after the Academy.

About the group:
In 2010 within NGO Test! – Theatre to Students we established ESC Theater out of the need for the joint cooperation and continuity of a work begun at the Academy. The group includes some former students of the Art Academy in Osijek and young performers who worked in Zagreb for many years. As an association we want to expand cooperations with current and future participants of our festival, as well as the student population in Europe.

Name of the play: Between us

Directors and choreographers: Leja Jurišič i Teja Reba
Authors of the text: Leja Jurišič i Teja Reba
Light design: Borut Cajnko
Producent: Nataša Zavolovšek
Photography: Petra Vever

Duration of performance: 75 min

About the play:
Between us is an intense creation about coexisting and vicinity, about solitude and passion. The performance shows us the complex feminine understanding of a female body and the flow of time. For a performing genre a film montage is used as an approach (the slow-motion, deficit of a spoken sound, frozen motion). They use it as content (as a communication noise between us, a disturbance) and as a composition for it tears the line of time and keeps the attention of the viewer
Between us is the result of three years of consistent collaboration between Teja Reba and Leja Jurišič. The piece it self was created from August till November 2009 in Slovenia and France. The basic interest of two authors was the understanding of the necessity of co-existing among human beings. On the level of a genre and theatrical form they were interested in the flow of time in dance compared to the flow of time in film. As for the 'language' of the piece they researched movement equally to the spoken word.

About the performers:
Leja Jurišič and Teja Reba are both young Slovenian choreographers and dancers.

Leja has a respectable international experience in collaboration with different choreographers: Meg Stuart, Mala Kline, Matej Kejžar, Janez Janša. Her performative skills bring multilayered understanding of the body which becomes even more visible in her own choreographic work. Since 2005 she created 5 pieces: R'z'r*, For myself, Hidden, Pre-Christmas dinner, Between us.

Teja has a very analytical approach to movement and the body attitude in general. She was trained in India, Brazil and France. Her reach education in the anatomy of movement enables her to perform a wide range of technically demanding choreography. Her creations: Between us, Pre-Christmas dinner.

Graphic design: Philip Grüber Bojovich
Partners: YANVII - Cesena (Italija) i Zavod Vitkar (Slovenija)
Special thanks: Branku Potočanu, Dragani Alfirević, Maloj Kline i Katji Legin

Duration of performance: 40 min

About the play:
What happens if the sight tells you are meeting a human, but your senses cannot recognize a human being? What determines if one is alive? And quite the opposite: how does a body without life act? How does a body striving for life behave? What makes one human? What makes oneself a particular self?
What makes me – me?
The starting point for the process were questions about being alive and being dead, and the notion of “undead” – as introduced by Slavoj Žižek, which means: „retaining all the predicates of a living being without being one“.The work is very much influenced by a research about androids and mechanics, however aiming to question what does it mean to be a human being.
The work is inspired by: Krzysztof Kieślowski’s short film “Talking Heads”; Phie Ambo’s documentary “Mechanical love”; Jungian psychology and the research on dreams.

Name of the play: The opposite of killing (Suprotno ubijanju)

Choreographer: Tzveta Kassabova
Director-consultant: Tatyana Sokolova

Performers: Emilia Kamenova, Irena Tzvetanova, Iana Lazarova, Christina Pileva, Tanya Katzarova, Stephana Taneva, Victor Milushev, Galin Velikov

Duration of performance: 45 min

About the play:
The opposite of killing explores loneliness, anger, understanding, remembering, and beauty related to the absence of a close friend. The play was initially the solo work of Tatyana Sokolova and then expaned into a performance with eight students from the New Bulgarian University at Sofia. One of the big inspirations for the work is Arvo Part’s music that brought the idea of simplicity, the beauty of openness and space.

About the group:
Tatyana Sokolova is a teacher of modern dance techniques in NBU since 1994 and the performers are her students.

„In the process of working with the students at NBU I am trying to expand their knowledge of dance, to encourage them to be creative and at the same time to introduce them to my aesthetic and movement style. I am using improvisation, creative tasks and theatrical structures to involve the dancers in the work. The movement vocabulary of the work is a combination of relies technique, athletic and dynamic dancing, pedestrian and minimalistic gestures. In general, space is the key element in my work.

In this, unlike in my like other projects, I explore space with just dance tools. We are relaying on clear lines and pathways, extremes in density and color and dynamics of the stage in order to invite the audience into our world. With this work I would like for the dance to create a frame that will allow each viewer to find their own questions and answers.“

Name of the play: Gecko Dance – Dance of moonlight

Director: Ryuzo Fukuhara
Costume design: Martina Štirn
Photography: Janusz Matuszeweski

Duration of performance: 45 min

About the play:
The gecko is a common lizard in Asia. They gather around fluorescent lamps at night.
The word gecko sounds the same as "gekko", which means "moonlight" in Japanese.
In addition, my original Korean family name is Moon. In this performance I am connecting Asia and Europe by diving into my origin, linking these concepts: the gecko, the moonlight and the night.

About the performer:
Fukuhara’s interest in Butoh was confirmed after attending a Butoh workshop led by Semi-maru from the group, Sankaijuku, in 1987.
In 1991 Fukuhara joined the Butoh group Maijuku directed by one of the leading figures in Butoh, Min Tanaka. From 2000 onwards, Fukuhara switched focus to Europe. He has performed and held workshops in many countries, including the UK, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria, Russia, USA, Vietnam, Cambodia; and more recently Spain.
In 2006, he was awarded the 2nd prize of the solo-dance contest at 11th Masdanza - the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Canary Islands, Spain.

Name of the play: The Madman and the Nun

Director: Michel Nebenzahl
Author of the text: Stanislaw I. Witkiewicz

Performers: Selma Agopian, Steven Ayache, Lola Fonseque, Roland Richard, Morgane Simon, Alexandre Thepin, Jérémy Thuilliez

Duration of performance: 35 min

About the play:
We are in a cell of the security unit in a psychiatric hospital: “Dementia Praecox” ("premature insanity"), what is also diagnose pronounced towards a young poet who is in a camisole there. But the medical team, following the notice of one of his members - a psychoanalyst - decided to tempt an experiment by seeking the help of a young nun in order to "extirpate the complex" of a forgotten "accident" which would be the cause of a "devastation" from which the poet suffers. The shock of a meeting between "the madman" and "the nun" literally blows up the psychiatric device, the benchmark of all disciplinary institutions.
The choice of this creation answers the vocation that we recognize of the university theater: extension and deepening of the directory. Our interest went this time on this short play by S.I. Witkiewicz, written in 1923. that is at the junction of expressionism, dada and surrealism. Tadeusz Kantor staged it in 1963 as a manifest of his “Theatre zero”. We then would like to link what Kantor meant with this „Zero“ with the „zero“ challenge of Test!0.

About the group:
The Company “Les Indifférents“ includes diverse fields of activity conected with performing arts; dramatic art, scenography, dance, music. Their practice, teaching, research is not professionnal or "amateur" but strictly „university". It aims at unpublished work, at what, for diverse reasons, couldn't be published somewhere else. The Company performs unpublished texts in several languages. The rigor and the inventions to which it refers and of which it testifies, were recognized during all the Congresses of the AITU.

Name of the play: Apatheia

Director: Artemis Lampiri
Performers: Mor Shani, Reut Shemesh, Ilan Gold
Music: Meesha Marks

Duration of performance: 22 min

About the play:
Apatheia is a trio dance piece that deals with the battle that is happening inside us when ego, super-ego and the id are coming in a collision.

A woman is introducing herself showing us her urge to control the people around her through her peculiar personality. Two men are representing a manipulative relationship that could refer to the one of father and son. Slowly these two worlds merge and become one. The game between solitude and companionship, sharing and self indulgence is just now starting.
The kind of relationships that are introduced together with the state of being of the soloist are underlining the odd but yet honest and introspective psychological space that the performers are in. They just exchange partners in three different duets without any heartbreaking goodbyes. In fact they deliver their own mach to the next person when they are through with him. It’s not only that in the end that one of them will decide by himself to move on to the next identical relationship by her own will.
No one is getting in the way of the others’ wills and instincts. They are there in order just to accompany each other throughout their actions and needs. The “I” is much stronger than the “WE” but is more than clear that the “WE”’ is necessary so as to define the “I” and hold it through its being and survival.
Apatheia is a choreography about facing the core of us. It is a mixture of my childhood, my adult life, my entourage and the images I have before going to sleep processed in a blender with my choreographic knowledge, dramaturgy instincts and stage design taste.
Apatheia creates a demand on both the dancers and the audience to leave all other thoughts aside; to enter the theater space as if it were part of their fantasy and for me as an artist to see my entrails on stage as if my limbic brain is flesh and bones, breathing without me.

About the group:
The three dancers have collaborated with me in the developmental process of creating movement for the choreography concentrating on a small corner in the back of their minds; the place we all go to when we cannot face or feel life.

Authors of the text: the group

Performers: Karlo Kučanda, Jadran Grubišić, Maja Dobrila, Marko Kalc, Marina Bažulić

Associates: Ana Ogrizović, Mario Podrug

Duration of performance: 50 min

About the play:
Chas is a performance of the physical theater based on the elements of Beckett's Quad. It deals with the flow of time in space and separating these two concepts, or the question of whether space exists without time. In this sense, the circle appears as a symbol of the flow of time and the square as a symbol of the material, box, space. From the structure, which is continuous, came out the story about the flow of time in one particular moment of a man. The story of his struggle to understand and accept the transience, and finally death, which results in some new form of life. The omnipresent consciousness of the force that drives everything, and it is a force life-death-life.

About the group:
Five artists from different fields of art (acting, puppetry, music, dance, performance) were assembled and went to investigate quad.

Duration of performance: 60 min

About the play:
This is the new reading of Eugene Ionesco, a classic of the absurd theatre. Setting and access to the piece confirm the ubiquity and the timeliness of the absurd as our everyday life, and we can even say, as a way of life. The action is transferred from the professor’s room on the ground of a TV studio where goes the direct transfer of teachers and students competing in a big bang of knowledge and ignorance. Final sum corresponds to the figure of absurd theatre, 0 (zero). Where all this leads?
"There is no effective means for easy rule of man rather than entertainment...
With the help of the fun one can make idiots from whole nations."

About the group:

Title of the work: Café Evropa

photography

Art photography approaching the idea of social consciousness. Using double exposure technique the author is interested in the space generated between two images. Photographs were made between 2003 and 2009 in various European countries between Lisbon and Istanbul, two European capitals standing far apart although sharing the same atmosphere. With this project the author is searching for an idea of Europe through the cafe as the concept.

Title of the work: we'll probably name it afterwards!

multimedia, performance

John Henry Newton and Clemence de La Tour du Pin are an Anglo-French creative duo who are currently collaborating in London. Their collective work appears very conversational, almost like three-dimensional diagrams of symbol and language that are strung together by drawings, texts and objects. They have a firm ethic of "doing something" which means that their performative installations become messy monuments to their own creative process. This seems to capture an element of the everyday, with found materials and familiar themes recurring throughout the spaces they manipulate. Like a soup of the freshest ingredients, their blend of material, subject and concept is always best served hot (with a small pinch of salt).

Title of the work: This is not me

video

I did a series of performances in my home as a way of investigating the alienation and the claustrophobic feeling of the contemporary everyday. I wanted to express this through the relation between the body and the psyche, using the outer body as a description of what is going on in the inside.

Title of the work: The Walk

video

This video is a study of a single action: The walk.
At the same time it is a study of places we walk and lead our lives, as well as triviality and loneliness that echoes from it.

Title of the work: Acoustic quintet of visual noise

action, performance

This performance is pointing at communication between the computer and the human – a basic interactive coexistence. Is the human controlling the computer, or the computer is controlling the human? The piano roll is a cage in the space of a computer sound in Fruity Loops. Let’s bring some more human nature to computer music.

Title of the work: Lettersoup

interactive installation

Lettersoup is an installation that invites the public to create their own letter-forms and alphabets. It features a physical interface (digital turntable) so that anyone can fiddle and perform with the controls in order to create their own alphabets; finally, they can have their new font e-mailed to them, ready to be used in most graphics and text applications.

Title of the work: The Final Countdown

performance, action

Zero! Current social and political situation in our society and the world reminds of many turning points in human history which came out amidst revolutionary and radical changes. In such turmoils various religious groups, as well schools of scientists, always emerge trying to peddle salvation to the ordinary public, luring them with different visions of apocalypse--a consequence of rejecting their ideas--and offering "the solution".
Are we really close to the moment "zero"--the end of the world--or our current political, religious, and general social condition on this planet is nearing the moment when all such apparently trivial theories will be brought down to nothing--zero--when people will use critical thought and act as one?

Title of the work: mix[ing]redients

interactive performance

mix[ing]redients deals with remote controls, distribution of roles and decisions between deterministic and improvised qualities of composition. It reflects on the power of controlling in equal manner elements such as sound and light but also the dancer. By using a much-mediated environment the spectator becomes responsible for the progress of the piece.

Title of the work: Possible Cities

animation

Possible Cities is composed of 26 short animations, each of them corresponding to a letter of the Latin alphabet. Possible Cities are not recognizable; we gave them names we have invented. Our intention is to reflect on meanings of cities in contemporary society. Cities are conglomerates of memories, desires, and languages; cities are exchange places, not only of goods exchange, but also of words exchange, memories exchange as well as desires.

Title of the work: Me vs. Myself

video

This video inquires into consciousness about personal duplicity and frustration with perception of surroundings in a given moment. The window, a view to the outside, I use as a metaphor for my own perception and my other presence for that part of my personality which spoils that perception and causes my pessimism. The failed attempt of cleaning the window and the fight with myself at the end results with destruction and the story ends with an announcement of a result from which one can assume of which kind of a fight this is talking about.

Title of the work: Kobajage – Grad iz snova

public art, installation, photography

Project Kobajage – Grad iz Snova (Make-Believe – A city of dreams) is based on the change of human priorities and wishes during life. Questioning is conducted mainly by polling nine-year-olds during their class. Guided by that change as the main characteristic of the project, we are also interested in which way the design of a city of dreams changes in a grown-up person and would like to conduct the same poll with the adult citizens of the city of Osijek so we could document their cities of dreams.

Title of the work: Cambrian Explosion

installation

In this installation two computers are involved in an intricate evolutionary debate. The sound output of one computer is used to generate a 3D entity on the other computer, which, on his turn, generates sound again based on this entity. This process is then repeated, with each iteration building upon another, creating an ever evolving play of shape and sound.

Title of the work: Jutarnji program

video

Justificatory, Igor Juran asks the question: “Aren’t people aware of each other in the same measure as they are of themselves?” Equating reality with virtuality, we are reducing life to simulation. Reducing the universe to the inside of a computer we agree on contracting our consciousness. Observing a sketch of two protagonist’s movement form Igor’s video work Jutarnji Program, a city map cut-out acquired over the Internet, led me to thinking of how our everyday trajectories from a point A to a point B significantly resemble digital representations – that which is possibly linear, without an interest for all that is not a (current) goal. “Who is that? I’ve no idea. I’m not programmed to know, care”. (from the text “Instructions for Rapprochement” by Barbara Vujanović)

Test!0 music programme summary

LUFT
An indie-rock trio from Zagreb set up in 2008. After only a few concerts, the outfit received many compliments both from the audience and the critics alike, who bestowed upon them the title of "the most pleasant surprise of the 2008". “Their weapons are fantastically rich musical arrangements, interweaved by polyphony of sounds that simply cannot be detached one from another, by stuffed, anthemic refrains and interesting gradations, as well as by the pure compact sound and riffs.”

DJ SANJIN
Journalist, poet, marketing manager of Dallas records, resident DJ of the rock club “Jabuka” where he performs under the name Franciska Svašta, and one of the favorite DJs of cultural events in Croatia. The audience has had the chance to hear him on various festivals such as ZFF, Motovun, ZagrebDox, Human rights, RAF... and he does a hell of a job when it comes to making people dance, with his mish-mash selections, predominantly of indie rock hits.

MUSICa
Vocal/instrumental duo comprised of the singer Elma and the pianist Paul. They started collaborating a few years ago after which they created a teamwork repertoire of jazz, pop and sevdah (a bosnian traditional folk music form) arranged in a jazzy/popish style. FAR GO TRADERS
Electronic duo from Croatia formed 10 years ago by A Stunned Visitor, the one with a classical music education and the love for his electric guitar, and Kramar Zaibatsu, the one that apparently possesses no inborn sense of rhythm, inclined to his rusty computer and a broken tape recorder, who set the foundations of the aggregate that today bears the name of Far Go Traders. In their own words, they are mostly driven by the desire for fame, money and beautiful women, their purpose is to deprive as many sentient life forms in the vicinity, of their ability for critical thinking, as well as to increase the consumption activities… by playing dark jazzy, funky and bass heavy trip hop to cinematic breaks.

Test!0 conference programme summary

International Conference “Student Theatre and Political Activism”
Student Centre “Cvjetno naselje”, conference
March, 24th to 26th, 2010
Zagreb (Croatia)

During the last two decades the demand for active social and political engagement in art has become one of the most urgent ones. Reasons are many and diverse, from the ecological to antiglobalist ones, but they successfully summon artists from various fields. However, while conceptual, performance and video artists demonstrate strong political awareness and readiness, most of the theatre artists yield to the inertia of their field, reacting slowly, if at all. Can students change this? This conference seeks to provide a platform for the exchange of practices and experiences relating to social and political activism among student theatre groups at the university. Our aim is to analyse recent initiatives and reveal innovative approaches to theatre as a vehicle of social change and political statement.

The key questions of conference are:
Does theatre has the power to make a change? If so, do students recognize it?
Are they willing to use it? Is there a need to use it?
What can we learn from other artistic practices?

The conference welcomes all people involved in theatre, theory or practice.

MASKA – RELJEF NUTRINE

workshop, performans, exibition

Kruna Tarle

This interactive and intermedial project is simutaneously taking place in three different areaes.

In the first area lump of clay, set on a table, is permanently transformed, that goes from hand to hand of random participants. With their eyes closed, they impress in the material auto/portrait, guided solely by internal impulses. Variable "map" of the face in this raw material, is photographed, and that way we collect the material for the exhibition. Fluid images – reliefs of a short life, is being decant from hand to hand, from the form in form. Limitations of materials (substances), and yet their inexhaustance, inconsumness and eternal change of forms has allusive character. Commitment of the individual and singularity of the time period is in contrast with offered and omnipresent  model of the ego.

In the second area there is "ceremony" of taking plaster casts of faces, so that would be another way of reaching the inner, the true face as one confrented to the outward, retouched, superficial and willingly chosen.

The third way and turning to inward is the process of drawing croquies of faces/masks in the technique coal on paper. "Factory" of faces, such as lifetime and inexhaustabile  graphics fingerprints, continuously fills the walls of the gallery.

The exhibition therefore is not something pre-prepared, and defined. It creates and grows from day to day, it is alive and - shared.

Performance includes mime form with masks, tactile communication only, and so is mentaly closing cycle of the theme development.

The project is simultaniouesly workshop, exhibition and theater, everything that is happening gets theatrical augury, partly because those who would be only spectators are not present.
